Pomfret
was the first town in eastern Connecticut to
establish a public library in 1740. It was first called
the "United Society for Propagating Christian
and Useful Knowledge."

The current Abington Social Library
was built in 1833. Established in 1793, it is
the oldest active Ladies' Library in the United
States.

The Pomfret Public Library has a wonderful story hour for preschoolers each
Tuesday morning as well as a Summer Reading Program for our area youth. Several
special interest programs are presented throughout
the year.
Story time for preschoolers and kindergarteners (3-5 year olds) are every
Tuesday from 10-11 and from 1:30 -2:30 starting October 3rd and running all fall. The only
exception is October 10th -- no story hours that day.
We will be having a session
called Laptime Stories for children birth through age 3 and their caregivers on Thursday
mornings from 10-10:30, starting October 5th. Those who are interested should call the
library to preregister.
